Ohno, the Scallywag pirate has finally gone home to her character creator, Jason McCullough. He teared up a bit when I pulled back the coat and showed him the tag. (Playing Possum is the team name for our collaborative films.)
The greatest joys are in the fleeting moments.

Let's outline the process. Just for fun.
-Sketch until you're out of paper and pick a design. -Map the guitar with tracing paper and create a final pattern. -Coat the pattern with masking tape and razor out a stencil. -Trace the stencil pattern onto the guitar with fine point sharpie. -Using a dremel, remove the finish down to the bare wood. -Using acetate or alcohol, wipe clean any remaining sharpie. ---Be careful not to remove the finish with this method. -Stain every 4-6 hours until the pattern is at the desired shade. ---Do not to use too much at once or it may travel through the wood grain underneath the finish. -Finish with a wood wax or polish. I used orange oil & bee's wax. It might be interesting to explore different techniques with spot-staining or spray paint... That will be an idea I'll keep rattling in the back of my mind for the future. Alright!
Only a few weeks in and I'm already falling dangerously behind on the projects I've done, and instead of photographing them, I just keep moving forward. Tell you what, if a film company hired me, I would be the last to leak confidential material! As I finished up details on my own guitar (waiting for a sunny day to photograph that beauty), my brother Augustine asked me to do his guitar! I jumped right in with a quick rendition, then cleaned it up for the stencil. I've been approached by a few other musicians who asked me to do theirs as well. But as most musicians are broke and I'd like to consider myself a professional artist, I had to turn them down. Twelve plus hours of free labor for a stranger is not my idea of a fair time. That said, I still might be tempted. You know those projects that you always plan to do but never seem to get around to?
I've finally started sketching and mapping out the stencils for my guitar. Soon it will be as beautiful as the music that comes from it. With another compulsive urge to create, I looked around my space and found too much of everything I've made before. So I sat and folded origami for a few hours.
Then burned it. Complete Catharsis. While waiting for samples of latex paint to dry, I've been working on a Part III to Jupiter's Light over the last few days. Today, I submitted Part II Io's Anomaly to Sun & Sandstone again, and hopefully they will publish me a second time. You can read Part I here.
I've taken a different approach to writing this story, which is to only write a single scene every year so I can focus on what will really have impact. It's easy to write the fluff in between, so skip that and get to the meat. Make it worth every word. This means they are both sequential and episodic, which is a hard thing to balance. Wish me luck! Hey guys!
A good friend of mine Jason McCullough has been working on a stop motion animation project called Scallywags, to which he has done a fair bit of product marketing. This includes shirts, mugs, buttons, stickers, and finally an Ohno plushie! A few months ago, I showed him how to make a paper pattern, which is useful for all sorts of things. I'll have to document that process sometime... Jason ran out of time to sew the final pattern, so I took over in late December. Today I created the coat using the draping method, totaling about 4-5 hours including time spent on the cuffs, collar and hemming. Now I just have to do her cute little face and hat. It has come time to turn another leaf. So this year I've decided to start a blog. My first online social anything. (I have an email address, does that count?) The reason is that I do a lot of work that doesn't fit into most traditional categories, and I'd like to start sharing it before it is either sold, adopted or tucked away on a shelf somewhere. The other reason is that like most artists I am simply terrible about documenting before jumping on to the next project. So a few new friends and I kicked off this January One by making piñatas!! Mine was of the grand planet Saturn, which looks great against the OIAF spaceman poster. We made a pact to fill and break them for next New Year's Eve.
Every proper party needs a piñata. |
